Business Case Study Report: Optimising Wireless LAN

In the dynamic landscape of modern business, a robust and efficient wireless LAN (Local Area Network) is crucial for seamless connectivity and productivity. This case study explores the challenges faced by a mid-sized enterprise, and some of the works we carried out to optimise their wireless LAN connectivity and performance. The organisation experienced connectivity issues, slow data transfer rates, and inconsistent coverage, impacting employee productivity and overall operational efficiency. The report outlines the analysis, proposed solutions, and the resulting benefits of optimising the wireless LAN infrastructure.

Challenges

  • Frequent Disconnects/Dropouts: Users were reporting that their laptops and devices would drop out and disconnect from the wireless networks multiple times a day, impacting their productivity and causing them to disconnect from business calls.
  • Poorly Implemented Guest/BYOD Network Access: Best practices were not being followed with guest and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) SSID’s, posing an increased business security risk.
  • Inadequate Coverage: Certain areas within the organisation lacked reliable wireless coverage, hindering mobility and collaboration.

Analysis

  • Wireless Site Survey: A comprehensive wireless site survey was conducted to identify areas with poor coverage and interference. This involved analysing the physical layout of the office space, identifying potential sources of interference, and assessing signal strength in various locations.
  • Network Traffic Analysis: Utilising network monitoring tools, JGC IT conducted a thorough analysis of network traffic patterns to identify bottlenecks, prioritise critical applications, and optimise bandwidth allocation.
  • Security Assessment: An in-depth security assessment was performed to identify vulnerabilities and recommend enhancements to ensure a secure wireless environment.
  • Scalability Planning: Future growth projections were considered to design a scalable wireless infrastructure that could accommodate the increasing number of devices and users. An asset inventory is taken, providing a list of devices being used on the LAN, e.g. wireless access points and switches.

Proposed Solutions

  • Implementing QoS (Quality of Service): Prioritise critical applications over the network to ensure consistent performance, especially during peak usage times.
  • Enhanced Security Measures: Deploy advanced encryption protocols, implement secure access controls, and conduct regular security audits to mitigate potential threats.
  • Wireless Infrastructure Upgrade: Introduce the latest wireless technologies, such as 802.11ax, to improve data transfer speeds and overall network performance.
  • Strategic Access Point Placement: Optimise the placement of access points to ensure uniform coverage and eliminate dead zones.
  • Network Management Solutions: Implement centralised network management tools to monitor, analyse, and troubleshoot the wireless network in real-time.

Benefits

  • Improved Productivity: Enhanced network performance ensures uninterrupted connectivity, fostering increased employee productivity and collaboration.
  • Cost Savings: Optimising the wireless LAN reduces downtime, leading to cost savings associated with productivity losses and IT support.
  • Increased Mobility: A properly implemented wireless network allows employees to move freely within the office premises while staying connected to the network. This flexibility can lead to improved collaboration and faster decision-making.
  • Guest Access: The business can offer guest wireless internet access, facilitating communication with clients, partners, or visitors without compromising the security of the internal network.

Conclusion

By addressing the identified challenges and implementing the proposed solutions, JGC IT Services significantly enhanced the business’ wireless LAN network coverage, performance and reliability. This optimisation not only improves connectivity and data transfer speeds but also provides a secure and scalable foundation for future growth.
